When to go to Peru?
Secrets of the Andean seasons

A country of three worlds

Planning a trip to Peru is the art of choosing between contrasts. From the sunny beaches of the Pacific, through the stark, mystical peaks of the Andes, to the humid heart of the Amazon. Each month reveals a different face of this country, and we will show you how to hit the moment when Peru shows you its most beautiful side.

The Andes in full sun

Key events:

June is the anniversary month for Cusco. The highlight is Inti Raymi (24 June) – a re-enactment of the Inca Festival of the Sun that attracts travellers from all over the world.

● MAY: Qoyllur Rit’i Festival
● JUNE: Corpus Christi & Inti Raymi
● JULY: Peru’s Independence Day
May – October

Dry season:
When the mountains touch the sky

May opens the period in the Andes that travellers call the “Golden Era”. After months of rain the mountains are lush green, but the sky becomes almost unnaturally blue and cloud-free. This is when Machu Picchu looks its most spectacular – with no mist hiding Huayna Picchu.

A paradise for trekking lovers

If your goal is to walk the Inca Trail, climb the rainbow mountain Vinicunca or trek around the Ausangate massif, August and September are the uncompromising choice. The paths are stable, the risk of rain is minimal and visibility lets you make out snow-capped peaks dozens of kilometres away.

“Bear in mind, however, the large temperature swings. During the day the sun is very strong, but as soon as it sets, the temperature in Cusco can drop to around zero.”

Logistics and bookings

The popularity of this season has its price. Tickets to Machu Picchu and seats on Belmond trains sell out many months in advance. As an agency offering a premium standard, in this period we place particular emphasis on private logistics, so that our clients can enjoy peace and quiet even in the busiest places.

November – April

Rainy season:
Mystical Peru in green

The rainy season in Peru, called the “season of renewal” by locals, is often unfairly overlooked by tourists. It is a mistake that costs them an encounter with the most mystical face of the Andes. Rain in the mountains rarely lasts all day – it usually comes as sudden afternoon downpours, after which the sky clears, creating ideal conditions for photographers thanks to an incredible play of light and cloud.

The luxury of solitude among the ruins

What is most valuable at this time is the absence of crowds. In January or March Machu Picchu is wrapped in clouds that drift lazily between the terraces, giving the place an aura of mystery you will not experience in July. The queues for the trains disappear, and the best hotels in the Sacred Valley offer an even higher standard of care and privacy.

Important note: In February the Inca Trail is closed to tourists for maintenance. It is, however, an ideal moment for alternative routes by train or exclusive round trips through the lower parts of the mountains.

Flavours of the season

For food lovers this is the most interesting period – the markets in Cusco and Pisac are laden with exotic fruits ripening right now. This is when Peruvian cuisine, considered the best in the world, tastes at its most authentic, drawing on the freshest gifts of the earth.

Peru in the rainy season - lush greenery

Advantages of the season:

  • ✔ Lower prices for flights and premium accommodation.
  • ✔ No crowds at key viewpoints.
  • ✔ Landscapes in deep emerald.
  • ✔ Better day-to-day availability of Machu Picchu tickets.
The coast of Lima and the Pacific
December – March

The Coast and Lima:
Pacific summer

While the rainy season continues in the Andes, the Peruvian coast is enjoying its finest moments. From December to March Lima awakens from its winter sleep, shedding the grey cloak of mist known as Garúa. This is when the sun shines here almost without a break and the temperature hovers around an ideal 25-28 degrees Celsius.

A culinary adventure in full sun

This is the best moment to visit the districts of Miraflores and Barranco. A walk along the Malecón cliffs at sunset, dinner at one of the world’s best restaurants (such as Central or Maido) and fresh ceviche taste best right now, when the sea breeze brings refreshment after a sunny day.

The Garúa phenomenon:

Bear in mind that from June to October Lima is often shrouded in a low, dense mist. Although the temperature is mild, the sky stays white. If you want blue skies over the ocean, choose the European winter months.

The Amazon: The Cycle of the River

The Amazon:
Where time flows with the current

In the Amazon the notion of “seasons” takes on a completely different meaning. Here rain is part of the everyday landscape, and the key to choosing your dates is the water level in the Amazon basin. Each month offers completely different experiences – from boat trips among the treetops to hikes deep inland.

High water (December – May)

A magical time for those seeking luxury on board cruise vessels. High water makes it possible to sail deep into the jungle, to places inaccessible by land. This is when you can watch sloths and exotic birds up close, straight from your cabin window.

Low water (June – November)

When the water recedes, it reveals sandy beaches and allows treks along the forest floor. It is the best moment for observing caimans and the pink dolphins that gather in the main river channels. There are far fewer mosquitoes then, which for many travellers is the decisive argument.

Expert’s choice: September and October are the months of ideal balance – the water is low enough to explore on land but high enough to travel comfortably on larger vessels.

Soroche and the weather:
How altitude dictates the conditions

Many people ask whether the season affects how altitude sickness feels. Although atmospheric pressure itself does not change drastically, humidity and temperature are of key importance for your recovery. In the dry season the cold, crisp air helps concentration but requires intensive hydration.

PoPeru’s golden rules of acclimatisation

01.

Gaining altitude gradually: We always start our routes in the lower areas, giving your body time to produce red blood cells.

02.

Local wisdom: Coca leaf tea (mate de coca) is not just a tradition but real support for circulation, available with us at every step.

03.

Premium rest: We choose hotels that offer oxygen-enrichment systems, which guarantees deep sleep even at 3,400 m a.s.l.
